  What is a domain?
A Domain can be thought of as your virtual identity. Like a fingerprint - a domain name, once purchased, is unique to you and may not be used by anyone else. Domains include www or .com addresses - for instance - www.example.com. Domains can be as creative as you like: www.mybusiness.com or, just a description of what people may find at your address: www.thejonesfamilyphotos.com. Included with your new domain are e-mail addresses, for example, sales@example.com, joe@mybusiness.com, or even mary@thejonesfamilyphotos.com!

They are a powerful but simple way of reaching your audience; everyone from family and friends to potential clients - Domains are effectively your personal link to the Internet.

Domains are registered for 2 years initially, after which they may be renewed for various lengths of time (up to 10 years).

  What is hosting?
Hosting describes the act of storing your domain's information - everything from the e-mails you receive to the images displayed when your domain is accessed. Your information is stored on a 'server', a special computer which is always connected to the Internet, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Hosting providers provide servers for your information to be stored on, so it is accessible using the Internet.

Just like a storage business, hosting providers charge a monthly fee for the storage of your information. In return, your hosting provider will maintain its servers to ensure your information is always accessible.
